On Sunday, October 30, Recreation SA hosted a 'Girls Day Out' to raise money for the Cancer Council.

Instead of the "Girls Night In" the event was a six kilometre kayak held at West Lakes with all proceeds going to this worthy cause for research into women's cancers.

While it was a little windy the team from Encounter Paddling were keen to participate along with the approximately 200 other women from around South Australia some of whom had never paddled before.

For Bec Mutton and Bron Puckridge the event was their first ever paddling at West Lakes being new participants to the sport.

The rest of the team, many of whom started their paddling as a form of recreation or spending time with family and friends, have participated in either sprint or marathon events on the course, but enjoyed the opportunity to have a relaxing paddle with a group of like minded women.

Hannah Davis, a local Adelaide paddler and Olympic medal winner from Beijing who is in training for the London Olympics was the ambassador for the event and was on the water to offer support and encouragement to all of the participants.

Kayaking is a fabulous way to promote health and fitness.

Encounter Paddling offers a Ladies Night on Wednesday nights for all ladies who would like to participate in a sport that promotes fun and fitness in a low impact way utilising the wonderful natural environment.

If you would like to find out more about how you can come and have a go please call Cathy Venning 0408 803 896.
